Overview
Madrichim at BIRS is a leadership development and teaching program open to all 8th-12th graders, ran by our Youth and Family Program Specialist, Ben Brent. Madrichim meet every week on Sundays, with their day divided into two parts: leadership development programming and in-school helping.
What do Madrichim get?
- Community service hours, which can be put towards graduation requirements, national honors society, and college scholarships.
- Stipends, which can be used for youth programming, conventions, and shabbatons.
- Learn leadership, communication and teaching skills while being able to implement them as a Madrich/a.
- The opportunity to give back to BIRS, stay connected with Beth Israel, and hang out with Jewish friends.
- To be a part of, but also curate, a fun and educational environment.
- A certificate to recognize completion of the leadership development and teaching program.
What are the expectations of Madrichim?
- 85% attendance rate, with all absences being communicated beforehand (no “no-shows”).
- Maturity level necessary to serve as a leader and role model to BIRS students.
- Willingness to work with students one on one or in small groups.
- If assigned to work with a teacher, the ability to receive constructive feedback.
How do Madrichim get assigned their position?
Most Madrichim are assigned to a position based on their interests, skills, and personal preferences. Madrichim may serve as Hebrew tutors, activity leaders, teacher aides, other leadership positions, and school and synagogue volunteers.
What’s covered in the leadership development program?
While the Madrichim program revolves around in-school helping, half the time is dedicated to developing the leadership and teaching skills of the Madrichim themselves. Topics covered include public speaking and advocacy, conflict resolution, time management, identifying and utilizing effective teaching methods, etc.
What about other 9th-12th grade learning opportunities?
In addition to the Madrichim program, 9-12th graders can sign-up for our Hebrew High(er) Learning program consisting of once a month intensives with dinner, covering high-level and eye-opening topics in Judaism. Click here to learn more.
